Olive and I are starting to like Tony Stewart. A little.
NASCAR driver Tony Stewart is donating bulletproof, stab-proof vests to police dogs in Indiana and four other states.
Stewart, a Columbus native, donated the money to provide 30 vests for the Indiana State Police K-9 unit and 10 for police dogs waiting for vests in Georgia, New Mexico, North Carolina and Minnesota.
Susie Jean of Socorro, N.M., requested a grant from the Tony Stewart Foundation for vests for the 14 dogs currently in the Indiana State Police unit. Stewart upped the amount to cover more vests upon learning the state police unit was expanding to 30 dogs.
The vests cost $695 each, according to Jean's Web site, meaning 40 vests would total nearly $28,000.Jean founded Vest 'N P.D.P. (Police Dog Protection) Inc., a nonprofit group that collects donations to buy bullet- and stab-proof vests for police dogs. So far, the nonprofit has provided 169 vests to police dogs in 22 states, excluding the Stewart donation.
"Police work dogs give everything they have in the service of mankind. How nice it is to be able to give them something in return," state police Superintendent Paul Whitesell said in a statement issued jointly Monday by the Tony Stewart Foundation and state police.
Stewart will present the vests to state police Thursday at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont.

Busy, remniscent, happy, outraged, accomplished, excited, underprepared, tired. That's just a sampling, but I'll be back soon. Lots to share.

I actually drove to work on Thursday. I had a meeting downtown and didn't really know how to navigate my travel needs by bus. It was also raining cats and dogs, but that doesn't scare me off - I usually float.
I nearly forgot how to drive to work, actually. I got there alright, but it was a bit surreal.
After work and my meeting, I headed home for a moment, then to the big-box home improvement store to get paint for the house (this, you see, was my weekend project).
Still raining, I decided to paint the back door first, as I could do that from inside. Not too easy, actually, as furry critters were very curious about my activities.
Friday morning, the plan was to wake early and start painting outside. Not so fast, though. More rain:
By the afternoon, the rain subsided enough for me to get to the back of the house and to scrape the west side windows. They really needed it (the scraping AND the paint):
Saturday, I was painting by 7 am. I had a brief emergency, when, at the top of the extension ladder with a paintbrush in my hand, Olive trots past me and into the street! She has no fear of cars and I have never trained her to be in the front yard on or off the leash, so it was a heart-stopping moment. I collected her, calmed my nerves, and got back to work. At 2 in the afternoon, I decided that was enough swatting mosquitoes for one day and came in to shower. On Sunday, I was out painting by 6:30 in the morning and finished up by 9:00 or so. By finished up, I mean the first of two coats was on the whole house - even though the paint can said one coat. Don't believe it! I intend to touch up or do the second coat next weekend, and scrape the glass, as I don't bother to tape windows. MUCH easier to paint and scrape.
Sunday afternoon as I got in the car to run an errand and to visit some kitties in my care (sorry about the confusion to the Mommy of said kitties), I discovered that Otto did not want to start. My suspicion is that a new battery will do the trick, but I have surmised that while a car battery will fit in my bicycle basket, I may not be able to steer it with such a load. It's used to produce and library books.
So... I decided to come in the house, cool off, and watch a little Wimbledon.
OH.
MY.
GAWD!
My high school BF was a pretty good tennis player, but aside from occasionally watching him play, I rarely saw much tennis. I can't remember the last time I watched Wimbledon - Boris Becker, maybe? I did name a cat after him (and Boris Karloff and Boris Yeltsin, perhaps).
The 2008 Wimbledon final was unbelieveable. I have a newfound respect for the athletic ability of tennis players! I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen!
Congratulations! You have to love a guy named Rafael! And what extension!
A quick jaunt on my bicycle (before it got dark) to return a housekey and have a cold beverage (thanks, cheekymonkey!), then home to try to cool off and go to sleep so that I can start all over again this week!

I have been exceedingly aware of my carbon footprint these days. The economy, the price of gas and utilities (and everything else, for that matter), has helped to make this situation a bit more obvious and urgent to me. I am pretty sure I don't really mind gas prices going up that much - it's going to take something like $8/gallon gas to make some people take notice (ref: the line of cars at any McDonalds or still-open Starbucks Drive-Thru on any given day). Where I live, it's only compounded by the SUV drivers who floor it to get around you or drive directly into a puddle right next to you as you cross the street to wait for the bus. I'll be posting more in the future about my experiences on the bus, but it's been very interesting. And crowded.
Last night I realized I needed to mow my lawn. I didn't want to fire up the gas mower, so I used my silent reel ball bearing-driven mower instead:

No, I am not going to show you an actual picture of me mowing the lawn. It was 80-something degrees and I was wearing my pink knock-off crocs that Olive drops on me every morning to wake me up and my Hello Kitty pajama pants (envision if you must, it's got to look better than the actual scene). Who needs a gym membership when you can mow your lawn with one of these??:
That's the one!

Then, this morning, I saw this video posted on MetroDad:

Now THAT's a footprint.

What's your favorite song with "America" or "USA" in the title? Bonus points if you share it with us.
Does this make me a nerd? Whatever, dude!

Get ready. Republican, er Independent Senator Joe Lieberman is earning his pay from John McCain and the GOP. He stated on Face the Nation:
"Our enemies will test the new president early," Lieberman, I-Conn., told Face The Nation host Bob Schieffer. "Remember that the truck bombing of the World Trade Center happened in the first year of the Clinton administration. 9/11 happened in the first year of the Bush administration."
That's right, Joe. Scare them into voting for McCain. I choose to err on the side of hope, not fear.
Incidentally, I don't see Senator Clinton as the VP, but rather in a key cabinet position where she can help the United States with it's embarrassing health care situation. I'm curious to know Obama's choice for a running mate, and I trust him to make the best possible decision. Remember trust? It lives on the same street as hope.
